लुथरन सोसल सर्भिसेज (एलएसएस)
स्वयंसेवकहरूको एउटा समर्पित प्रयासमा प्रायोजन गर्न पाएकोमा गर्व गर्छ । यो किताब
नेपालका विभिन्न शिविरबाट सन् २००८ देखि अमेरिकामा पुनर्स्थापित गराइँदै आएका नेपाली–भाषी भूटानी शरणार्थीहरूको हितका लागि तयार पारिएको हो । धेरैजनाको प्रयास र
सहायताले अवधारणाबाट किताब तयार हुन एक वर्षभन्दा कम समय लाग्यो । लुथरन सबैप्रति
कृतज्ञता ज्ञापन गर्न चाहन्छ ।
यो पुस्तकको अवधारणा चार जना
स्वयंसेवकहरू: डग हल, सतन आचार्य,
तारा आचार्य र राजेश कोइरालाको अनुभवबाट आएको हो । डग हलले
शरणार्थीहरूका लागि सन् २००८ मा अ कन्साइज इंगलिश–नेपाली नेपाली–इंगलिश डिक्शनरी (www.nepalidictionaryproject.org) प्रकाशित
गर्न थाल्नुभएको हो । सतन आचार्य, उनकी पत्नी तारा
आचार्य र राजेश कोइरालाले आचार्यद्वयको कम्पनी एस् एन्ड टी कम्युनिकेसन्सबाट सन्
२०१० अगस्तदेखि पन्ध्र–दिने नेपाली न्युजलेटर अक्षरिका (www.aksharica.com) को प्रकाशन थाल्नुभएको हो । उल्लेखित चारै स्वयंसेवकहरू न्यु ह्याम्सर
राज्यका बासिन्दा हुनुहुन्छ र यही स्वयंसेवी कार्यका कारण एक-आपसका बारेमा जान्नुहुन्थ्यो । चारजनाको भेटपछि उहाँहरूले
अमेरिकामा बसोबासका लागि सहयोग गर्ने एउटा नेपाली र अंग्रेजी किताबको संभावनाबारे
छलफल गर्नुभयो । उहाँहरूले लुथरन सोसल सर्भिसेजलाई सहायताका लागि आग्रह गर्नुभयो, हामीले सहर्ष स्विकार्यौं ।
न्यु ह्याम्सर च्यारिटेबल फाउन्डेसन (www.nhcf.org) ले किताब तयार पार्ने लागत उपलब्ध गरायो । यी सबै
संस्था स्थानीय भएर पनि यो योजनालाई पूर्णता दिन पुर्याएको योगदानको हामी धेरै प्रशंसा गर्छौं । यो किताबको
स्थानीय उत्पादन भए पनि वितरण र प्रभाव देशभर हुनेछ ।
किताब लेख्नुअघि सतन, राजेश र डगले न्यु ह्याम्सर र नर्थ क्यारोलाइनामा भूटानी शरणार्थीको लक्षित
समूहमा छलफल आयोजना गर्नुभयो । छलफलका सहभागीहरूलाई अमेरिका आएलगत्तै यहाँ बसोबास
गर्न के कस्ता विषय जान्न आवश्यक छ र किताबमा के कस्ता जानकारी लेखिनुपर्छ भनेर
सोधियो । भूटानी समुदायसँग काम गरेको अनुभव भएका संस्थाका कर्मचारीहरूसँग पनि
किताबका विभिन्न विषयबारे मंथन गरियो । यी छलफलबाट छ सयभन्दा बढी विषयहरूमा लेख्ने
सुझाव पाइयो । किताबमा समावेश विभिन्न विषय छनौट प्रक्रियामा सहभागी सबैलाई हामी
धन्यवाद दिन चाहन्छौं ।

विभिन्न व्यक्ति र स्थानमा गरिएका छलफलबाट लिइएका छन् र भूटानी शरणार्थीहरूका लागि
मात्र मनासिब छन् । प्रतिलिपि–अधिकार प्राप्त आफ्ना
सामग्रीहरू प्रयोग गर्न दिएकोमा हामी युएससिआरआइसँग धेरै आभारी छौं ।
स्वयंसेवी सम्पादक तथा लेखकका रूपमा
डग हलले युएससिआरआइको पुस्तकबाट लिइएका विभिन्न थप विषयका अंशलाई क्रममा
मिलाउनुभयो । हलले अतिरिक्त विषय तथा अध्यायका अंग्रेजी अंशहरू तयार पार्नुभयो ।
राजेश कोइरालाले सबै नेपाली अंश लेख्नुभयो । कोइरालाले डल हलद्वारा संयोजित अंग्रेजी अंशबाट अनुवाद गर्नुभयो भने अक्षरिकाका विभिन्न अंकमा
प्रकाशित केही विषयलाई पनि लिनुभयो । राजेशसँग नेपाली पत्रकार तथा लेखकका रूपमा
लामो समयसम्म काम गरेको अनुभव छ । अनि कोइराला (www.koirala.com.np) यो किताबको अवधारणालाई वास्तविकतामा परिणत गर्ने कारक पनि हुन् ।
यसरी हामीले विभिन्न विषयमा लेख्यौं
। अनि त्यसै विषयसँग सम्बन्धित विभिन्न विज्ञ व्यक्तिलाई खेस्राहरू बाँड्यौं ।
उहाँहरूको प्रतिक्रिया र सुझाव माग्यौं । यस प्रक्रियामा पनि दर्जनौं व्यक्तिले
सहायता गर्नुभयो । किताबका सामग्री सटिक र तथ्यहरू सही रहुन् भन्नका खातिर हामीले
उहाँहरूका सुझाव पनि समेट्यौं ।
अंग्रेजी–नेपाली भाषा अनुवादक तथा अदालती कार्वाहीहरूमा नेपाली–भाषा सहायताको लामो अनुभव भएका होम क्षेत्रीले पुस्तकका प्रत्येक अध्यायका
दुवै भाषाका सबै विषय अक्षरशः समीक्षा गर्नुभयो । उहाँले सबै जानकारी र प्रस्तुतिहरूका
सन्दर्भ भाषाले गर्दा फरक परे/नपरेको केलाउनुभयो ।

Lutheran
Social Services (LSS) is proud to have sponsored the efforts of a dedicated
group of volunteers committed to publishing this handbook. The book is for the
benefit of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees who have been arriving in the
United States from the refugee camps in Nepal since 2008. Transforming the idea
for this book into a reality in less than one year has taken the effort and
support of many. LSS would like to acknowledge all involved.
The
idea for the book grew out of the experiences of four volunteers, Doug Hall,
Sattan Acharya, Tara Acharya and Rajesh Koirala. Doug Hall began publishing A
Concise English-Nepali Nepali-English Dictionary for the refugees in 2008
(www.nepalidictionaryproject.org). Sattan Acharya, his wife Tara Acharya, and
Rajesh Koirala began the publication of a bi-monthly Nepali-language
newsletter, Aksharica, through the Acharyas’ company S&T Communications (www.aksharica.com).
All four live in New Hampshire and had heard about each other’s volunteer
efforts. Shortly after they met, they began discussing the idea of a book that
would provide helpful information about living in the United States in both
Nepali and English. They asked us at Lutheran Social Services if we would be
interested in assisting them, and we agreed.
Funding
for the creation of this book was provided by the New Hampshire Charitable
Foundation (www.nhcf.org). We greatly appreciate their willingness to
underwrite this project even though they are a local community foundation and
the distribution and impact of this book will be nationwide.
Before
starting the process of writing the book, Sattan, Rajesh, and Doug conducted
focus groups among Bhutanese refugees in New Hampshire and in North Carolina.
Participants were asked what information they thought was important to include
and what they would want newly arriving Bhutanese to know about living in the
United States. Brainstorming sessions were also conducted with staff of a
variety of community agencies that had experience working with the Bhutanese.
More than six hundred topics were suggested. We would like to thank everyone
who participated in this process and helped to determine the topics included in
the book.
Some
parts of the English content of this book were copied with permission from
Living in the United States: Life Skills for Burundian Refugees, published in
2008 by the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) and available
online at (www.refugees.org). Many of the topics covered in that work had also
been suggested by the focus groups and are just as relevant to Bhutanese
refugees as they have been for Burundian refugees. We are extremely grateful to
USCRI for permission to use their copyrighted material.
As
a volunteer editor and writer, Doug Hall organized additional topics into
chapters, adapted the USCRI material, and wrote the English text for additional
sections and chapters. Rajesh Koirala wrote all of the Nepali for this book.
Some of it was translated from Doug Hall’s English version and the USCRI book,
while some was taken from material he had previously written for Aksharica.
Rajesh’s long experience as a Nepali journalist and writer was also
instrumental in turning this book into a reality. (www.koirala.com.np)
We
circulated early drafts of chapters on particular topics to professionals
knowledgeable about the identified subject and asked for their feedback and
suggestions. Dozens of people helped in this regard. We have incorporated their
suggestions to ensure that the material is accurate and the facts correct.
Homa
Chetry, an experienced Nepali court interpreter and English-Nepali translator,
reviewed the combined Nepali and English texts of each chapter and made suggestions
to ensure that the two languages conveyed both the same information and the
same tone.
